Blizzards and Weight Loss Do Not Go Together

Ah, blizzards and weight Loss. They're certainly no peas and carrots.

Since Friday at noon, when I got out of work early because of the impending snowstorm, to, well, right this very moment, where I still don't have work today and haven't since. While I may have work tomorrow, it's less than certain. If the metro's still not fully operational, then the federal government will close, and I, too, will have another day to fill up with nothing but bad habits.

It's been a disaster. Really.

I do well with my diets during weekdays because I'm out of the house for work and bring only a limited amount of food with me. During the weekends, I do well because I exhaust myself with gym trips and walks around the city, far from my kitchen. And then there are blizzards. Where I can't go for walks because crossing the streets is terrible, and after 40 minutes outside my boots are soaked wet and out of commission for the rest of the day. And I can't go to the gym, because it's alternatively closed and separated by a block with a vacant parking lot that nobody's even thought of cleaning.

So, I haven't been doing well. It's my own fault. I got thrown out of my element and out of my routine, and I've let it defeat me.

Falling is okay, though. The trick is to get back up. And I'm going to get back up.

I just hope hope hope this storm that might come on Monday turns out to be a bust.

  1. Another storm on Monday? Man that rain cloud needs to find somewhere else to nest. I'm with you about storms throwing the schedule off.

It's tough. I've found that reading books helps me to keep my mind off food or cleaning or watching a movie.

Good luck and you're right getting back up is the most important thing to do.

  2. I'm glad you are still alive! :) That is the main thing! :)

I totally feel you, if I were trapped in my house for days at a time, I KNOW I'd start getting creative with the food (and baking).

Maybe you can set some goals for yourself, like pick a time for your meals, and then try to achieve certain things by then (exercises, projects, cleaning, watch a movie) anything to distract yourself. :)

You could consider your 40 min outdoor activity the exercise (even if its all you can do). Take a long shower. Kill that time! Don't let it kill you! :)

    You are doing great!

  4. Our blog yesterday was directed mainly at you, our friend in DC! We have been thinking about you since last week and hoping that you had electricity! I was just thinking yesterday as they predicted more snow, "If I lived in DC, I would have gained 20 lbs. by now!" If there was ever a situation where one should be award a "free pass," this historic snow storm is it! What else is there to do? Glad your OK & We hope the Monday's predicted storm is a bust as well!

  5. DO you have any exercise DVDs to do? I find the Jillian Michaels and Biggest Loser ones work really well to get you sweating up a storm and sucking air in your living room when you can't get out. My sister and brother in law live around DC and are also all cooped up with cabin fever, I feel bad for you guys (my brother in law is also an economist in DC and works in the federal reserve)

  6. Oi Vei. That's a lotta snow you have down there. I'm usually the one diggin' my car out.... I'm sorry that Mother nature has decided to pummel you with horrible white stuff. If you'd like, you can tell her to send it all up to British Columbia, as they have the Olympics starting Friday and no snow to ski on :)

  7. Hadley, I can sympathize with you. I haven't done that well this week either. Fortunately, I am leaving the snowbound DC tomorrow though. I hope you have a great next week.

  8. You guys really have been hit w/ a ton of snow! It's so hard to stay on track when you're snowed in. I know what you mean. I can stick to my plan during my weekly routine a lot better too. But you'll be fine!

  10. Do you have any exercise videos? I think that it would be a great thing to get some. Sit down at Collage Video some time and preview and find some you like and click with. Then you don't need to worry about wet snow boots, etc. If you want to do weights at home but don't want to spend money on weights, get some videos that use bands.

Sorry you got socked with snow!

  11. Like you say, just get back up! If there is another storm coming, stock the house with more nutritional stuff and chuck or donate anything that will be too tempting. :)

  12. I completely agree. I tend to succeed when I have structure. And usually that involves the work week. Sigh...

I have to admit that when I first saw your post title, my mind went straight to Dairy Queen. haha

  18. Hi Hadley,
Just checking in with you as I haven't heard much from you lately.
It has finally stopped snowing right?? Seriously, you guys got hit hard!
And there is no shame in falling. I've lost count of the number of times I have fallen.Even without the stress of blizzard conditions. Still picking myself back up though. And that's the important part. You CAN do it, remember that we're all here for you!!:-)
    Hugs-
    amy
